Sailability

Sailability at Port Bouvard Yacht Club offers people of all abilities the opportunity to sail regardless of their level of ability, skill or personal circumstances.

The sheltered waters of the Peel/Harvey Estuary provide the perfect base for our very stable Windrider 17 trimarans. These vessels can take up to two participants, their carers and an instructor out into the estuary to enjoy sailing in a safe environment.

Sailability Participant Information:

Membership & Fees:
Participants must be registered members of PBYC Sailability programme.

A sailing fee applies.

Preparation & what to bring:
Participants should be prepared with suitable clothing:

  • Sunglasses & a well-fitting hat (that won’t blow off - we suggest a tie cord)

  • Water proof jacket or a jumper (it can be cold on the water, even on a fine day).

  • A bottle of water.

  • Apply sunscreen before you leave home

Safety & Responsibility:

All Sailability Members must adhere to Sailability & PBYC rules and policies including –

Personal Flotation Device:
All members and Support Workers MUST always wear a correctly fitted Sailability Personal Flotation Device  on-board any boat.

Skipper’s Instructions:
The skipper of the boat is in charge and responsible for the safety of all on-board.  Everyone must listen to, respect and follow the skipper’s directions and instructions.

Are you interested in volunteering? 😊

We need volunteers to take on the roles of Skippers, Rigging helpers, ‘Meet-and-Greet’ people, Rescue Boat Drivers and observers as well as lots of other beach crew. Can you spare a few hours for this very worthwhile initiative?

Sailing and boating skills are required for ‘On-Water’ activities, although we can help with this. On-Shore roles can be fulfilled by willing volunteers. Be part of the team which promotes the joy of sailing as a recreation to people with disabilities.

Support Workers:
It is your role to take care of your person’s well-being and encourage and support them to engage with the activity as fully as possible to ensure that they get the most out of their sailing experience.  Speak with the skipper about how your person may participate & any special requirements. Ask for assistance if you need it.

Cancellation:
Sailability activity is very much weather dependent and sessions may need to be cancelled for this reason from time to time.

If sailing is cancelled, we will notify you or your agency by email or sms

Members must advise Sailability if they are not attending by 9am on Friday.
